What are your duties?

Current legislation requires all staff to receive basic training in fire safety awareness. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires that a “Responsible Person” must provide their staff with: “adequate fire safety training” that must be “suitable, sufficient and appropriate” and be “repeated periodically”. This training must include the practical use of fire extinguishers, appropriate to the workplace risks and delivered by a competent and suitably qualified instructor.

A series of simple steps can go a long way to protecting the premises, the employees, and the long-term future of the business.  Businesses are increasingly being visited by Fire Officers, who want to see your Fire Safety Risk Assessments; they will also want to know who your ‘responsible person’ is. Failure to provide these risk assessments, as well as to nominate a ‘responsible person’ could lead to your business being served an improvement notice.
