Chicken with maggots? Not a good combination in a butchery
30/10/2009
A London butcher’s shop was closed down by Environmental Health Officers (EHO) after a customer found maggots in a piece of chicken.
EHOs from Waltham Forest Council visited the butchery in Walthamstow in August after a complaint. The conditions found there were described as ‘dire’, with an infestation of blowflies and fly eggs on carcasses. Numerous pieces of putrid meat were also discovered.
Beard clippings were found around the wash hand basin and also on meat. Inspectors described it as ‘one of the worst butchers shops’ they had ever seen.
An emergency prohibition notice was served immediately upon the shop, which was ordered to close.
The closure was later confirmed by Waltham Forest magistrates court and the owner was ordered to pay costs of £560. The owner also agreed not to sell ‘ready to eat’ foods for the time being.
The shop was allowed to re-open on 1 September after a further inspection. The council is now considering whether to take further action.
A cabinet member for community safety, enforcement and protection, said: ‘This is a great, if rather disgusting, example of how our food safety team works to make sure residents can have confidence in the food they buy.
‘The conditions the officers found were frankly inexcusable and this case illustrates the kind of immediate action we can take against businesses that fail to provide good standards of hygiene.’
