Bakery lands in hot water - food safety and hygiene news
30/10/2009
A bakery has been fined for failing to ensure it had a hot water supply for washing utensils. When Environmental Health Officers inspected the bakery in Hendon
... in June 2008 they found the premises did not have a hot water supply to its wash basin and sink. The owning company was served with a hygiene improvement notice.
A follow up inspection occurred in December 2008 where it was found that although the wash basin had been connected, the utensil-washing area had still not been provided with hot water.
As a result of this failure, a prosecution was brought against the company and the owner at Hendon magistrates court on 1 October 2009.
The chair of the magistrates bench told the defendants that ‘insufficient hot water provision is particularly serious’.
The owner of the company, who contested the charge, was ordered to pay a £1,500 and a £15 victim surcharge. The owner later commented: ‘It is a very difficult time for businesses at the moment so the fine is a bit harsh, I think they could have just issued a warning.’
