Takeaway owner fined £13,000 for not cleaning up his act 12/11/2009 The owner of a takeaway has been fined for trying to clean a kebab grill with the meat still in position. The owner had been warned numerous times by Leeds City Council to improve conditions at the takeaway.

When investigated by Environmental Health Officers (EHO) a number of serious offences were discovered. The inspection, which took place in December 2008, revealed an insect infestation within the premises.

Dead insects were found on the floor, which was also covered with of grease, dirt and debris. One wall was so dusty that when food trays were leant against it, marks were left on the surface.

Dirt had been allowed to build up on a chopping board and equipment, such as the kebab shaver and a pizza slicing wheel, were covered in old food.

Food meant for public consumption was found to be at clear risk of contamination after an EHO saw that the large doner kebab had not been removed while the grill had been scrubbed using chemical cleaning products.

The owner guilty to seven food hygiene offences at Leeds magistrates court in October 2009. In addition to a fine of £9,000, he was ordered to pay full costs of £4,016 and a £15 victim surcharge.

One of the EHOs who inspected the takeaway commented: ‘Although conditions were not so severe that we could use our legal powers to close the takeaway immediately, we will continue to rigorously enforce the law and use all the powers at our disposal against businesses which choose not to comply with hygiene requirements.’
