A serious fire at the premises of a major supermarket chain in Plymouth was due to an electrical fault in a refrigerating unit.

The fire spread to the roof of the supermarket’s kitchen and fractured a water pipe. Around 60,000 gallons of water then poured through the retail space, flooding offices on the first floor and flowing down to the ground floor. The kitchen was “severely damaged”.

Around 10 firefighters tackled the blaze, on 28 January, after the alarm was raised at 1 pm. The fire was mostly out just under an hour later. The store has since been reopened.
