I have delivered Health and Safety presentations at two conferences organised for Schools and Academies and I have been ask to deliver similar talks at two further conferences. It is important that Health and safety in schools and academies is managed well.
At each conference, I delivered two talks: one aimed at schools and the other focused more on academies. I enjoyed delivering these talks on Health and safety in schools and academies and I think that the audience got a lot out of it (and there were several questions and discussions following on from them).
Construction Site Safety is proving to be an important theme for 2014. According to a recent HSE Newsletter (Issue 37), dangerous practices and poor standards were found at nearly half of the building sites visited during a month-long safety drive by HSE. The nationwide campaign saw inspectors visiting 2607 sites where refurbishment or repair work was taking place. The HSE found that basic safety standards were not being met on 1105 sites. On 644 sites, practices were so poor that Enforcement Action was necessary to protect workers. To this end, 539 Prohibition Notices served ordering dangerous activities to stop immediately and 414 Improvement Notices were issued requiring safety standards to be improved.
Construction site safety, the HSE and Enforcement action
Since the start of 2014, I have seen a great deal of evidence that the HSE are increasingly active in their enforcement visits to construction sites. In the month since starting the New Year, I have dealt with several enquiries relating to construction projects that have received a enforcement visit from the HSE. These visits have generally resulted in Improvement Notices or Prohibition Notices. In most cases, the site operators were unaware that the HSE are increasingly active in the construction safety arena. I have been able to provide help in several of these cases. We have assisted by:
