Phased Return to Work – Fire Safety

Once the coronavirus epidemic restrictions (the UK Lockdown) are relaxed and businesses start to return to work (probably in a phased return), there are many things that need to be checked  One important area that needs to be reviewed is that of fire safety. It is important to check that your fire alarm system is fully functional and no problems have occurred during the absence.

The following checklist will help you to perform a comprehensive inspection of your fire alarm system and general fire safety inspection.

Fire alarm system

  • Check your fire alarm’s status on the control panel. This will either be on a visual display or by illuminated LEDs, depending on the system. Any fault warnings or illuminated LEDs require immediate attention from your fire alarm maintenance company.
  • Check that none of your call points, detectors or panels have any physical damage to them.
  • Perform a routine test of your fire alarm system (If appropriate check each call point) to ensure the panel and sounders are working sufficiently.
  • Write down any problems you do see in your logbook and call fire alarm maintenance company.
  • Check that the fire alarm system has been devices and maintained at the appropriate intervals.

 Fire Wardens

If you are only having a partial phase back with staff. Have you considered the appropriate amount of fire wardens to be on-site?

Fire doors and emergency exits

  • Do all doors open easily and self-close fully into the door frame?
  • Are the door closures in good condition?
  • Is there any damage to the doors?

Fire Extinguisher

  • Are the fire extinguishers in their right location?
  • Are any of the plastic tags broken or missing?
  • Is the pin in place?
  • Is the gauge in the green?

External fire escape routes

  • Carry out a check (walkthrough) of all of the external emergency escape routes ensuring:
    • All routes are clear of obstructions
    • Moss has not grown on pathways making them slippery
    • The foliage has not overgrown
    • External gates unlock and have not rusted during the lockdown
    • External gates open with ease

Emergency lighting

  • Carry out a flick test on all emergency light.
  • Schedule a 1-hour test to be carried out within the next couple of weeks.
