11 January USA Seminars on Understanding Workplace Health and Safety I am privileged to let you know that I will be delivering a series of USA Seminars on Understanding Workplace Health and Safety. The central theme of these seminars is the importance of good standards of health and safety to a business. Consideration is given to costs of failure (both in terms of financial loss to the company and personal loss to those who suffer harm). The important driving forces for health and safety for companies and for individuals are considered and the importance of these driving forces is returned to through the two days of the seminar to reinforce their importance in the minds of the delegates. Consideration is given to why this is important and how it is to be implemented. The conceptual “Barrier” model is used to help delegates to pull the various strands of health and safety together in a simple and meaningful manner. This model links hazards and risks, through the risk assessment process to accident causation and on into accident prevention. The derivation of avoidance, control and mitigation steps is considered for risk assessment and related to the Barrier Model. Accidents and Incidents are bad for business: people are hurt or killed, commercial reputations are tarnished, contracts are terminated (or not won), and time is lost. Consideration will be given to how companies can avoid these negative elements and how they can improve the health and safety culture within their organization. Understanding how and why accidents happen is essential if we are to prevent them from happening again. The Barrier Model is a conceptual model for understanding how accidents occur and (hence) how to avoid them. Prevention is better than cure and, of course, there is no cure for a workplace fatality. Videos, case studies and syndicate exercises are used to bring the various messages home to the audience. Delegates are encouraged to contribute to the proceeding through the syndicate exercises and the Q&A sessions.
