The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO) requires the ‘responsible person’ (the employer, occupier or owner) to take reasonable steps to reduce the risk from fire and to ensure the safe escape for both employees and visitors.

The Fire Safety Order requires the responsible person to:

  • Ensure all employees are provided with adequate safety training at the time they are first employed and on being exposed to new and increased risks.
  • Appoint one or more ‘competent persons’ (a fire warden/marshal) to assist with fire safety in the workplace, and provide them with sufficient training to remain effective in reducing the risks from fire hazards.

Our training course is designed to help you and your fire wardens to meet your duties under the current legislation.

Course content includes:

  • How fires are caused in the workplace
  • Examples of components of the fire triangle that may be found in the workplace.
  • Hazards during or after a fire, including the products of combustion.
  • The characteristics of fire and smoke spread.
  • How to identify and control fire hazards and identify relevant limiting factors associated with these.
  • Methods of fire detection and raising the alarm.
  • Common fixed fire-fighting systems and where they might be used.
  • Principles and practice of Fire Safety Risk Assessment.
  • The role of the fire warden.
  • Induction briefings.
  • Legal duties and penalties.
  • Fire safety inspections.
  • The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
  • Practical session on the correct use of fire extinguishers.

Our course is suitable for those in the workplace who have fire safety duties (the responsible person) or for employees hoping to develop their basic fire safety awareness and undertake specific fire safety roles (for example as fire wardens/marshals) in order to assist their employer to manage fire risk.
